경기 36분, 반 페르시가 득점했다. 그는 오른발로 볼을 잡고 라파엘 반 더 바르트와 원투 패스를 주고받은 뒤 키퍼의 다리 사이로 골을 집어넣어 오렌지군단이 1-0 리드를 하게 해주었다.

스트라이커 반 페르시는 59분 교체아웃 되었다.

카메룬은 경기 종료까지 25분 남은 상황에서 균형을 맞추었다. 반 더 바르트가 패널티박스 안에서 핸들링을 범했고 사무엘 에투가 패널티킥에 성공했다.

하지만 경기종료 7분을 남겨둔 상황에서 클라스 얀 훈텔라르가 골망을 흔들면서 불굴의 사자들(카메룬)은 승점을 챙기지 못한채 집으로 돌아가게 되었다.

이 경기의 승리는 네덜란드가 조 선두에 올랐다는 의미이며 다음 라운드(16강전)에서 슬로바키아를 만단다는 뜻이다.

Robin van Persie opened his World Cup goalscoring account with a first-half strike in Netherlands' 2-1 victory over Cameroon on Thursday.

Alex Song was an unused substitute for the Indomitable Lions and will now head home after his country finished bottom of Group E.

Van Persie opened the scoring in the 36th minute. He collected the ball on the right and played a one-two with Rafael van der Vaart before slotting through the keeper's legs to give The Oranje a 1-0 lead.

The striker was withdrawn in the 59th minute.

Cameroon found an equaliser with 25 minutes remaining. Van Der Vaart handled in the area and Samuel Eto'o stepped up to convert the resulting penalty.

But The Indomitable Lions go home without registering a point after Klass-Jan Huntelaar netted a win for The Oranje with seven minutes remaining.

The victory means Netherlands top the group and will face Slovakia in the next round.
